Making The Change To SMTP Authentication

As of the 12th October 2004, all email accounts hosted by georgesteel.net will be changing to SMTP Authentication. This change affects the way you send mail, not the way you receive it.

All email accounts hosted with georgesteel.net come with the option to use a dedicated SMTP server for sending your email messages to other people. This server will usually be yourdomain.com. However, some of you may use the SMTP server provided by your ISP because they block outbound traffic on port 25 (The port used by SMTP) unless the traffic is going throught their own email server. Services such as Freeserve (Now Wanadoo) and BT do this. If you use an ISP that operates in this way, this change will not affect you.

So, for those of you sending mail via your own SMTP mail server such as mydomain.com, please read one of the following tutorials depending on your platform / email program.
