Shared Hosting & Dedicated Servers

I provide a number of “Off The Shelf” shared hosting packages to suit most small-business and personal websites, however, please bear in mind that shared hosting accounts can be configured to your exact requirements should the example packages below be insufficient for your needs.

Some Hosting FAQ's

What Is Shared Hosting?

First off, I only supply Unix/Linux based hosting packages. In a *nix environment, you can have multiple users on the same server each restricted to his own space. The term shared refers to the sharing of resources, i.e. everyone who has a website hosted by the server shares the disk space, network bandwidth, processor etc. This means that if another user of the system runs a particularly processor intensive script, there will be fewer resources available to everyone else using the system.

In reality, shared hosting is perfect for the great majority of websites and you should only begin to consider a dedicated server if your site needs very specialised software, your site is incredibly busy or security issues become a concern.

About The Email Accounts

The Email accounts provided under shared hosting have a 50MB mailbox size limit and a 10MB message size limit. This is rarely a problem as the accounts can only use the POP3 protocol. Usually, when you pick up your mail, the message is deleted from the server meaning that your mailbox will more often be empty.

None of this applies to managed or dedicated servers where mailboxes can be configured to any specification using any protocol.

More About SSL

The shared hosting accounts can easily be configured to use a dedicated SSL certificate, however the charge is £250 pa. There is little difference between shared SSL (included on the account) and a dedicated certificate apart from the URL used to access your site. With a dedicated certificate, the URL would be similar to https://www.mywebsite.com/ whereas shared SSL URL's will normally take the form of https://some-secure-server.com/secure/myusername/.

I hope that explains it. If you need any more info, drop me a line.
